Summary

The corporate "yes man," the wife-beater, the hot-shot male junior executive and the emotionally distant father are all boys pretending to be men, observe the authors of this liberating guide to self-transformation。 Writing within a Jungian framework, they perceive symptoms of "Boycaps per book psychology" all around us--in men's abusive behaviors, passivity and inability to act creatively。 To help males become more nurturing and mature, Moore and Gillette identify four archetypes of masculine energies from myth and literature: the Lover, brimming with vitality and sensitivity; the Magician, guider of the processes of inner and outer transformation; the selfless and wise King identified with Adam or primordial man; and the Warrior, whose energies often go awry in destructive activity。 Dream analysis, meditation, Jungian "active imagination" and ritual processes are among the tools set forth in a clear, concise map to territories of masculine selfhood。

Great analysis and history of the masculine archetypes in myths and cultures。 The authors sandwich the analysis with a call to live well with each archetype (and it does have relevance today), but other philosophies of life have been more convincing and impactful in my opinion。

While this provides an interesting perspective into the masculine, I had difficulty relating with the examples given in this book。 It seems that the author tries to support each perspective of the masculine with examples from stories, allegories, and myths。 I had the expectation to hear more day to day examples and results from clinical experiments。A good book to expand your perspective on the masculine energies, but something is lacking that I can’t identify with certainty。

The authors are correct in the sense that masculinity is lacking in the modern world。 The book also contains some interesting perspectives。 However, between the constant Star Wars (and other popular culture references) and factually incorrect statements (such as the claim that SS soldiers were required to torture puppies – in the country with one of the strictest animal welfare laws at the time) I cannot recommend this book。 It also does not contain much in terms of practical advice for men。

Great book。I didn't realize that the masculine archetype could be broken down into 4 separate components or entities。Being able to identify what they are can show you where you are and how far along your strengths are, and what areas need work。What is branded as "toxic masculinity" today should really be called "immature masculinity", and not "mature masculinity"。Most men these days feel lost in how to hold and carry themselves because becoming a man from that of a boy requires an initiation pro Great book。I didn't realize that the masculine archetype could be broken down into 4 separate components or entities。Being able to identify what they are can show you where you are and how far along your strengths are, and what areas need work。What is branded as "toxic masculinity" today should really be called "immature masculinity", and not "mature masculinity"。Most men these days feel lost in how to hold and carry themselves because becoming a man from that of a boy requires an initiation process from those that have achieved it before them。A good study of psychology, ego, subconscious, and shadow, or negative archetypes。I recommend this book。 。。。more

There's something to be said about the art of reading books you know you don't agree with。 Coming into this book from a non-Jungian (or worse, anti-Jungian) background is tough as it is rewarding。The average reader will notice there's a lot in here that either is bullshit, or sounds like it。 No amount of scientific jargon can hide the deeply Gnostic and esoteric roots of Jungian thought, as the metaphysical assumption of a primordial life energy with a neat multi-polar topology has been disputed There's something to be said about the art of reading books you know you don't agree with。 Coming into this book from a non-Jungian (or worse, anti-Jungian) background is tough as it is rewarding。The average reader will notice there's a lot in here that either is bullshit, or sounds like it。 No amount of scientific jargon can hide the deeply Gnostic and esoteric roots of Jungian thought, as the metaphysical assumption of a primordial life energy with a neat multi-polar topology has been disputed from multiple fronts。 Also, the tacit but strong insistence on two essential (ie, biological) genders adds a layer of polemics that will surely put future Jungians to sweat。 Finally, politically-minded readers might find the book "apolitical" to a fault。At the same time, dismissing everything here as obscurantist New Ageism might be a bit too close-minded。 Comparative mythology is itself a very interesting field, and the notion of deep knowledge being encoded in our ancient tales through recurring motifs is convincing, if not outright evident。 The pragmatics of it are of little importance。 Whether conscious or unconscious, genetic or cultural, necessary or contingent, whether or not we can accept Jung, Campbell, or anyone as the sole interpreter of the collective unconscious, the fact remains that reading stories and thinking archetypes can be good practical tools in the ultimate pursuit of the good life。In the case of King, Warrior, Magician, Lover, the discussed archetypes are undoubtedly positive models of virtue, courage, responsibility and selflessness; values whose absence is felt by many of us to be harming contemporary society。 More importantly, they're framed in the context of a full, mature masculinity and offered as an antidote against what feminists call the patriarchy and Moore & Gillette call boy psychology。 This makes the book relevant in an age where masculinity itself has been decried as problematic without boys being offered a clear alternative。 。。。more

This book in its goal to "reimagine masculine archetypes" leaves me with a sense that I just read an elaborate horoscope of sorts。 Sure, it makes sense to some degree, but then you can come up with infinite number of categorizations that are generic enough to "make sense"。The book is written very well in terms of language but it felt very, how to say, "cultish" to me。 Clearly it is targeted towards people susceptible to that kind of rhetoric that would make you do things "for the common good" if This book in its goal to "reimagine masculine archetypes" leaves me with a sense that I just read an elaborate horoscope of sorts。 Sure, it makes sense to some degree, but then you can come up with infinite number of categorizations that are generic enough to "make sense"。The book is written very well in terms of language but it felt very, how to say, "cultish" to me。 Clearly it is targeted towards people susceptible to that kind of rhetoric that would make you do things "for the common good" if you know what I mean。 And like all cults, it has somewhat a legitimate fundament, which in this case is Jungian psychological archetypes with a pinch of esotericism and nostalgia。Lastly the author tends to over-romanticize the past, explaining with passion how men were better, wiser, stronger back in the days and how we are all marching to oblivion in 21st century。 Again: I might agree to some degree that traditional masculinity is often ostracized today and it's not always for the good。 But then one can argue that people are opening up and trying to learn how to live freely in a new world where men don't need to shove their feelings away anymore waiting for nervous breakdown or suicide to happen。 Desperately clinging to past is not the way forward。 。。。more

An essential book to understand the four archetypes。 I was parallelly reading some zen books, which was a nice coincidence because although there are similar ideas in both these books, the ideas presented in this book are more practical。 Practical in the sense that, it gives a clear picture of how the ideal and non-ideal states of masculinity will look like and you could identify yourself with those states and work towards it。
